Boy Survives Tripoli Plane Crash That Killed More Than 100 People

In a miracle amidst tragedy, a 10-year-old boy was apparently the only survivor when a jet en route from South Africa Wednesday crashed while trying to land in Tripoli, killing more than 100 people.

The commercial jet, Afriqiyah Airways Airbus A330-200, had 93 passengers and 11 crew members onboard when it descended toward a runway at roughly 6 a.m. at Libyan International Airport and then crashed. At least 96 bodies have been recovered.

Most of the dead passengers, at least 61 people, were members of two Dutch tour groups that were coming home from on a nine-hour flight from Johannesburg. One group was headed to Brussels and the other was continuing to Dusseldorf, Germany. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/13/world/middleeast/13libya.html?hp

The young boy who survived the crash of Flight 771 underwent surgery. He is believed to be Dutch, but authorities had not yet identified him. Press reports said he suffered bone injuries.

The plane’s flight recorder was recovered, and authorities are investigating what caused the accident.
