Riding a motorcycle in the Big Apple is pretty risky business.

Last year New York City saw a large increase in its number of fatal motorcycle accidents, according to the New York Post.

The city Department of Transportation reported that 39 people died on motorcycles in 2010, an increase of 10 more than the prior year’s fatalities. That translates to a 34 percent increase in motorcycle deaths.

And while motorcycles only comprise 2 percent of all vehicle registrations, they account for 14 percent of all traffic fatalities in the five boroughs of the city.

Data shows that motorcyclists are 18 times more likely to die in crashes than passengers in cars, buses and trucks, according to the Post.

And the city reported that speed is a factor in 46 percent of motorcycle accidents.

Nassau County police officer Michael Califano, 44, died of injuries he sustained as he sat in his cruiser Friday night while doing a routine traffic stop on the Long Island Expressway.

Califano’s patrol car was hit from behind by John Kaley, 25, of Connecticut, who fell asleep while driving a massive flatbed truck. The cruiser was pushed about 100 feet until it was driven underneath, and crushed under, a box truck.

Kaley was charged with criminally negligent homicide after Califano died Saturday morning.

A  goods-train driver was under investigation for involuntary manslaughter in the deaths of 10 people in a train crash in Germany.  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-12328426

The goods-train struck a passenger train in the fog near Hordorf Saturday night. The conductor of the passenger train was among the 10 killed, and another 23 people were hurt.

Based on an eyewitness report, authorities are probing whether the goods train drive ignored a stop signal.

The collision crushed the front of the passenger train, and the force was so powerful that police were having trouble identifying the victims, because of the condition of the bodies.
